Something happened to Jenny, I figure. That’d set up a nifty little chain of events. Autumn blames herself for not being there to prevent it, possibly seppuku-level blamed, and Jason loses the closest thing he had to love since Alicia vanished. Naturally, Jason still has no idea that half the ladies in town are at least kind of interested. Now…does he go hunt up Chris and vent his fury like an extra from the Saw series before he climbs into a bottle?
…come to think of it, why didn’t Jason just consult that stupid book that Kyle was so desperate to get rid of? The one that told Jason he was actually secretly attractive to most of the surrounding area? Surely it would have had an idea of what happened to Alicia since it seemed to know so much else anyway. But then, I likely remember less about that book than was even shown about it, since it hasn’t shown up that often anyway.
So I find the facial expressions in the first three panels here really compelling, especially since this sort of peace/contentment has been persistently elusive for these two characters. I know the story line needs to keep moving, and we are like already “down two levels” of flashback/subplot, sure, but personally I would not have minded a few more pages of Jason and Autumn’s Excelent Adventure. One of the things I like about this comic strip is that at least occasionally we get to see things go well for our characters.
